The Currituck County Parks and Recreation Department maintains the county’s public parks and walking/hiking/horseback trails, offers athletic programs for youth and adults, operates the county’s Senior Centers, maintains and provides “Walking Communities” maps, and operates the Currituck County Special Olympics program.
The county’s “Walking Communities” initiative is aimed at helping residents improve their fitness and enjoy being outdoors. Twenty-one community walking trail maps have been created and can be accessed online by residents who wish to enjoy walks in neighborhoods and public locations throughout Currituck County.
Youth athletic programs run by the Currituck County Parks and Recreation Department include tennis, fall and spring soccer, tackle football, flag football, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, and t-ball/baseball/softball. T-ball, baseball and softball are coordinated through the Currituck Athletic Association. A week-long soccer camp is offered during the summer.
For adults, the Department offers league softball for men and women, basketball league play and open gyms, and exercise classes.
Currituck County’s Senior Center operates three Senior Center facilities where residents 55 and older can meet, have lunch, and take advantage of educational and recreational activities and exercise programs. The Center plays an integral role as a resource for the entire community, and assists other agencies in serving senior adults.
Currituck County offers Special Olympics bowling and basketball, open to residents 8 years and older.
- Maple Park: Pavilion with restrooms and grills, baseball/softball field, tot lot, 4 picnic shelters with grills, volleyball and badminton courts, horseshoe pits, fitness trail, concrete walking trail, and Maple Skate Park.
- Maple Skate Park, located at Maple Park, was designed by Grindline Skateparks and is receiving rave reviews from amateurs and pros. No cost; helmet, elbow and knee pads are required.
- Veterans Memorial Park: Pavilion with grills, horseshoe pit, waterfront boardwalk with fishing deck.
- Knotts Island Ruritan Park: Pavilion with grills and restrooms, tot lot playground. Knotts Island Senior Center is located next to the park.
- Walnut Island Park: Pavilion with grills, tot lot.
- Sound Park: Pavilions with grills and restrooms, boat ramps, boardwalk with gazebos, wildlife overlook on the Sound, playgrounds, paved walking trail, baseball/softball fields, volleyball courts, multi-use playing fields.
- Currituck Heritage Park: Whalehead Club, Currituck Beach Lighthouse and Light Keeper’s House, Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, original boathouse, boat ramp, picnic tables, gazebo overlooking the Sound.
