Largemouth bass, yellow perch, striped bass, tidewater silverside and pumpkinseed fish are the dominant species in Currituck Sound.  The Sound’s brackish waters also provide outstanding fishing for striped bass, flounder, red drum and spotted seatrout.  In spring and early fall dozens of small boats putter in and out among the small islands of the Sound, seeking largemouth bass

Ocean fishing is just a 20-minute drive away.

The best months to fish the Sound are April, May, September and October.  Due to the abundance of aquatic vegetation, weedless lures are a must.

CRABBING

All you need is a length of cord with suitable bait, chicken necks or fish heads do nicely, tied to one end. Throw the bait into the water, wait a few minutes, then pull on the line gently to see if you get a nibble.

Other methods use circular crab nets and collapsible crab traps. Crabs can be caught in local sound waters from late spring into early fall, but the best time is May, June and July.

Crab Dip Recipe:

8 ounces of cream cheese, softened
8 ounces of sour cream
16 ounces crabmeat
1/4 cup of mayonnaise
1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup chopped onions
1 tablespoon horseradish
1/2 teaspoon of salt

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine all ingredients until well blended. Spoon into an over proof dish. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese or Old Bay Seasoning. Bake for approximately 20 minutes. Serve warm with bread or crackers.
