County Government

Currituck County’s government is operating well in the information age.  The county’s official government website is well-designed and very user-friendly; it may be the best government website we have ever seen.

The property tax rate of .32 per $100 in Currituck County is far lower than in neighboring Virginia and in most of the surrounding North Carolina counties (Dare County at .26 is the exception):

  City of Hampton, VA 1.04
  York County, VA .66
  Virginia Beach, VA .89
  Tyrrell County, NC .74
  Camden County, NC .59

The county website contains a wealth of information about the county’s services for citizens and businesses, county resources, historical information, and the workings of the county government.  There is a comprehensive list of county departmental contacts with phone numbers and email addresses.  The calendar of events covers public hearings, events at the library and Senior Centers, parks and recreation events, and events run by the Cooperative Extension Service.

Other information that is readily and freely available through the county website includes:

  • All public meeting agendas and minutes
  • An interactive online GIS mapping system with parcel data and street centerline data, and static maps for a number of purposes
  • County land records, including .pdfs of all documents
  • County statistical information
  • County government employment opportunities
  • List and description of opportunities to volunteer through various county agencies and programs
  • Comprehensive information on transportation in the region, including the county airport
  • Links to all kinds of county, regional, state and national government and non-government agencies, organizations, and informational websites.
